Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2562
1879, $10 Refunding Certificate. PCGS Choice About New 55. Fr-214. . KL-395. A splendid looking example of this scarce type note, with beautiful, bold colors and bright paper. Although it appears a single, unobtrusive fold has been neatly and lightly pressed, the overall appearance remains that of a Choice Uncirculated note. Refunding Certificates were issued only briefly, and were really circulating interest bearing instruments similar to savings bonds. The interest on these notes was stopped by Congress in 1907, fixing the redemption value at $21.30, but they are worth far more to collectors today.
Estimated Value $5,500 - 7,500.
The Samuel J. Berngard Collection.

Lot 2564
1879, $10 Refunding Certificate. PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45. Fr-214. . KL-395. Several decades ago, this inegmatic issue was considered rare in all grades. Most examples were well worn or damaged. Since then, a small group of high grade examples has surfaced, giving most collectors a fair chance to obtain one. This collection includes four such notes, an unusual opportunity in any circumstance. This piece is bright, broadly margined, and appears to be much finer at a glance.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,500.
The Samuel J. Berngard Collection.

Lot 2565
1879, $10 Refunding Certificate. PCGS Apparent Choice New 63. Fr-214. . KL-395. This high grade example has a small edge tear at the left end as noted by PCGS Currency, and the paper has some very minor toning that is mentioned only for accuracy. Otherwise, the appearance is far above average for the issue and it remains techincally uncirculated--a very unusual status for this design type.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,500.
The Samuel J. Berngard Collection.
